About this bench
What The Overhead Bench is, who writes it, how a work order is put together, and what this desk refuses to do.
The Overhead Bench is an independent editorial reference on the sectional garage door and the operator that moves it. It is written for the person who owns the house with the door, and for the person who has to decide, on a Saturday morning, whether the noise is normal or whether a part is about to fail.
This desk is not a shop. It does not sell doors, operators, springs or remote controls. It does not rank installers, does not take bookings and does not name a brand as a partner. Every manufacturer, standards body and organisation named in a work order is described in the third person, and none of them publishes this site.
What a work order contains
Each work order takes exactly one question about the door on its track. The answer comes first, in the opening paragraphs, before any background. What follows is written so a reader can jump to the part they need: what the rating means, what to measure, what is normal, what is not.
The sources are named at the end of the order. They are the published standards, the installation instructions that ship with a door and an operator, the service literature, and the manufacturer's own published ratings. Where a source does not settle a question, the work order says so instead of guessing.
What this desk refuses
The bench does not tell a homeowner to wind, unwind or remove a torsion spring, a cable, a drum or a bottom bracket. Those parts store enough energy to injure or kill, and the work belongs to a trained technician with the right tools. A work order may explain what a spring rating means and how to tell that a door is out of balance. It stops there.
The bench also refuses two kinds of writing. It does not use superlatives about products, and it does not report a price as a fact unless a named source published it.
The number and the date
A work order is numbered inside its organ, so a reference such as DR-002 belongs to the second order filed under the door. It is dated with the day it was last checked, not the day it was first written. That date orders the front page, dates the entry in the feed and appears in the sitemap.
The name
The domain carrying this bench was registered and left empty in 2026. It was bought as a bare address, and this desk has no connection to any business that may have traded under a similar name before. Questions about the writing, a correction or a source the bench should read are welcome at the address on the contact page.
