Automatic Doors in the Access Chain
An automatic garage door is one link in the chain between car and house. Clearances, controls and safety devices decide whether the whole entrance works.

An entrance works only as well as its weakest step. The automatic operator, the wall control, the remote and the clear floor around a parked car are links in the same chain that starts at the driveway and ends at the kitchen. If one link fails a walker or a wheelchair, the automatic door does not fix the entrance.
The chain starts at the car, not at the door
A person who uses a walker or a wheelchair does not meet the garage door first. They meet the space beside the car. The door can open perfectly and the entrance still fails if the driver cannot get out, stand, and reach the interior door.
Measure the chain in steps: park, exit the vehicle, cross the garage floor, pass the interior door, reach the house. Each step has its own clearance. The automatic door is one step. The interior door is another. The floor between them is a third.

Which clearances around a parked car matter when someone uses a walker or a wheelchair?
Three clearances decide whether the car-to-house route works.
The side clearance at the driver door. A walker needs room to unfold beside the seat. A wheelchair needs room to position next to the door and transfer. A single-car garage bay built to the minimum width for the vehicle leaves nothing for either. The fix is often to remove stored items from the bay wall, not to widen the building.
The turning circle inside the garage. A wheelchair that enters the garage from the house must turn to face the car or the interior door. A walker must pivot. A bay packed with bicycles, bins and a freezer has no turning space, no matter how wide the slab is.
The path from the car to the interior door. This path must be clear of the door's own travel. A sectional door swings into the ceiling, but its tracks, springs, cables and drums occupy the side walls and the header. Storage against those walls narrows the route. The homeowner can clear that route today. The homeowner must not move the tracks, springs, cables or drums to gain space. Those are never a homeowner job.
What kinds of control belong on and beside an automatic door?
Controls fall into three groups, and each group has a place.
The wall control. It belongs inside the garage, mounted where a person standing at the interior door can reach it without stepping into the door's path. It must be out of the reach of small children. UL 325 covers the entrapment protection requirements for these operators, and the wall control is part of that system.
The remote and the keypad. These belong to the driver and to anyone who uses the entrance regularly. A remote clipped to a walker or a wheelchair is a control, and it needs a mounting point that does not interfere with the person's grip or the device's folding.
The safety reverse. This is not a convenience control. It is the device that stops the door when something is in the way. UL 325 requires it, and the homeowner tests it once a month by placing a block of wood in the door's path and closing the door. If the door does not reverse, the operator is out of service until it is repaired.
What has to be planned before mobility changes rather than after?
The order of work matters more than the budget.
Plan the route before the equipment. A homeowner who buys a walker or a wheelchair after a hospital stay needs a clear path the day the equipment arrives. Clearing the garage bay, moving storage off the side walls and checking the interior door threshold are tasks that can be done in advance.
Plan the controls before the diagnosis. A wall control mounted at standing height may be unreachable from a seated position. A remote that lives in a car console is useless to a person who enters the house on foot. These are small changes, and they are easier to make on a calm weekend than in the week after a surgery.
Plan the door service before the door fails. Springs, cables and drums wear on a schedule set by cycles, not by convenience. A door that is out of balance strains the operator and shortens its life. A homeowner can lubricate rollers and hinges and test the safety reverse. A homeowner cannot replace a spring, a cable or a drum. Call a technician for those, and do it before the entrance is needed daily.
What should never be automated without a working safety device?
No automatic door should run without a working safety reverse and, where the installation calls for it, a photo eye. ANSI/DASMA 102 and the manufacturer's installation instructions set the clearances and the mounting positions for those devices. A homeowner who disables a photo eye to stop nuisance reversals has removed the link that protects a child, a pet or a person using a walker.
The same rule applies to the interior door if it is ever automated. An automatic interior door without entrapment protection is a hazard in a small space. The operator is not the improvement. The safety device is what makes the operator usable.
Where the homeowner's line sits
The homeowner can clear the bay, keep the path to the interior door open, test the safety reverse monthly, lubricate rollers and hinges, and replace remote batteries. The homeowner can read the installation manual and the ANSI/DASMA 102 clearance figures.
The homeowner cannot adjust or replace springs, cables, drums or the counterbalance system. Those parts store energy and cause serious injuries. This bench does not sell doors or openers, and it does not recommend brands. It reads the standards and the service manuals and reports what they say.
